Classic Trench Coat
When I was at university we had to do peer group presentations in front of other students who were specialising in different subjects. We could choose whatever we wanted to talk about (as long as it was relevant, ie design related) and I chose trench coats.

I ended up going over my time and I spent a total of 12 minutes discussing the history and symbolism of this classic coat, the connotations of heroism and links to old Hollywood via Casablanca and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I still sometimes think about doing that talk because I was so nervous, and how funny it was that everyone had to listen to me wax lyrical about a coat for so long, but I guess that just shows how passionate I am about clothing design!

To me, the trench coat is a beautiful, classic wardrobe staple that transitions perfectly when the weather is too warm for a proper coat but too cold for a jacket. I can wear it with so many different outfits and it instantly makes me feel like what I’m wearing has been elevated to a more stylish, put together look.

I’ve had mine for several years and it’s become an old faithful. Perfect for a Spring jaunt, I’m currently wearing mine with a much beloved cashmere scarf and my Veja trainers.
