Hot Apple Cider Recipe

As the nights draw in closer and darker than ever I find myself drawn to creature comforts. Nothing beats a cosy night in, candles burning while the wind whistles outside, the rain pattering against the window. You can find me on nights like this wrapped up in a blanket with my slippers and a good book. If I really want to make an occasion about it, I’ll make my favourite festive drink, hot apple cider.

I was first shown this recipe as a teenager and had never had anything like it before (the trend hadn’t quite made it to Aberdeen yet!). I remember very vividly being so happy that it not only tasted incredible but that it also made the whole home smell so snug and inviting.

To make, you will need;
A carton apple juice
At least two oranges
Cinnamon sticks
Cloves

Take the oranges and pierce them with holes, then fill the holes with the cloves. Put them into a pan with the cinnamon sticks and empty the apple juice on top, then put on the hob on a medium-hot heat. Cook until the juice is hot but not boiling (around 5 minutes), stirring occasionally. Then strain the juice into a heatproof jug, ready to be poured into your favourite mug

I have adapted this recipe a few times, for example adding a bit of ginger for a kick! It’s very much a ‘whatever is in the cupboard’ recipe, and I highly recommend you play with the recipe and make it your own!
